The Albanese Labor Government is backing an advanced materials engineering firm in Coniston with $1.5 million to help upscale development of its new critical mineral alloy.
This funding will help Gravitas Technologies expand its production capabilities, creating highly skilled jobs across the Illawarra. It will also strengthen domestic supply chains and increase the company’s export potential, helping establish Australia as a world-leader in advanced materials manufacturing.
Gravitas Technologies has developed VulloyTM – an advanced material engineered for high temperatures and extreme environments, with key applications in aerospace, defence and green steel production. ‘Greening’ Australia’s steel, iron, alumina and aluminium producers can provide a boost of up to $122 billion to the economy by 2040 according to a 2023 report by Accenture.
The firm is one of the latest recipients of the Albanese Government’s $400 million Industry Growth Program (IGP). Support of $1.5 million from the Albanese Government will allow Gravitas Technologies to build a commercial-scale isostatic pressing facility at its premises in Coniston and enable enhanced commercialisation by improving scalability, production efficiency and overall material quality.
IGP grants are aligned with the seven Government priority areas for the $15 billion National Reconstruction Fund (NRF): value-add in resources; transport; medical science; defence capability; renewables and low emission technologies; agriculture, forestry and fisheries; and enabling capabilities.
Gravitas Technologies applied for, and was successful in receiving, support from the Industry Growth Program prior to the commencement of the caretaker period.
IGP funding is designed to scale up early-stage businesses so they can apply for NRF co-investment during later phases of development. It is provided through Early-Stage Commercialisation grants up to $250,000 and Commercialisation and Growth grants up to $5 million.
Applications for the program are open on an ongoing basis. For more information, including eligibility, visit: business.gov.au/igprecipients.
