Illawarra families deserve better aged care services than the neglect they experienced under the previous government, and under the Albanese Government that is what they will get.

The work begins now to understand what local aged care services need from the new government and how our plans to boost care for the Illawarra’s elderly can help.

That’s why Stephen Jones MP and Alison Byrnes MP arranged a roundtable of local service providers today, to hear from them about the challenges they face and the solutions they want.

The forum, attended by all local, residential aged care providers discussed workforce constraints, funding challenges, the need for greater on-site nursing care and better nutrition for residents.

Quotes attributable to Stephen Jones, Member for Whitlam:

“The government is committed to delivering on the promises we made at the election by ensuring older Australians in the Illawarra receive the aged care they deserve.

“We’re listening to the concerns put forward by those on the frontline who are so passionate about getting our elderly the best possible care.

“We know service providers rely on our support to make that happen and that better cooperation will mean better care for residents.”

Quotes attributable to Alison Byrnes, Member for Cunningham:

“The last two years have been really tough for our elderly and for our aged care workers.”

“Scott Morrison left aged care in a mess.  We have staff shortages and workers leaving the industry in droves.”

“Labor took a five-point plan to the election which puts dignity, quality and humanity back into aged care with policies for 24/7 nursing, 215 minutes of care per resident per day, better pay for our aged care workers, better food standards and accountability and transparency in the sector.”
