Wollongong City Council has welcomed $10 million from the Federal Government’s Infrastructure Investment Program, supporting delivery of the $42 million Southern Suburbs Community Centre and Library in Warrawong.
Located on the corner of King and Greene Streets, the landmark facility began construction in September 2025 and is on track to open to the public in the second half of 2027.
The new centre will be a modern, high-quality and welcoming hub, designed to bring people together and support the needs of the growing communities of Warrawong, Berkeley, Lake Heights, Cringila, Primbee, Windang and Port Kembla.
It will expand access to library services, technology and essential community supports, while providing safe and engaging spaces for children and young people to learn, connect and grow.
Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said the funding marked an important milestone in delivering vital infrastructure for the city’s southern suburbs.
“We’re grateful to the Federal Government for delivering on this $10 million commitment to a project that will make a real difference for our community,” Cr Brown said.
“It’s more than just a building — it’s about ensuring everyone has access to the spaces and support they need to thrive now and into the future.
“This facility has been thoughtfully designed to reflect the needs of our diverse and vibrant southern suburbs communities, creating opportunities for learning, connection and access to important services all in one location.”
Federal Member for Cunningham Alison Byrnes MP said the investment by the Australian Government and Council would deliver a lasting asset for the local community.
“I am so excited to see works on this vital community facility progressing so well, delivering the modern hub our southern suburbs deserve," Ms Byrnes said.
“This centre will create an inclusive and welcoming space where local people can connect, learn, and access vital services – helping to strengthen community ties and support local families. I know this project will play a key role in revitalising Warrawong and will soon become an integral part of everyday life.
"Thank you to Wollongong City Council and everyone involved for their hard work in bringing this important project to life."
The project also includes a new town square, landscaped public spaces and improved parking, helping to create an inviting and accessible destination in the heart of Warrawong. There are also future plans for further streetscape improvements focused along Cowper Street that will be revisited as the redevelopment of Warrawong Plaza and the delivery of the Warrawong Foreshore Parklands progress.
The Southern Suburbs Community Centre and Library is part of Council’s Delivery Program outlining unprecedented investment in works, services and project delivery over the next four years.
The draft Infrastructure Delivery Program for 2026-27 has a budget of $151 million allocated across more than 250 projects, which are currently underway or planned to commence across the Local Government Area. The program includes funding for new community centres and libraries located at Warrawong and Helensburgh, construction of the Darkes Town Centre Sporting and Community Hub, and new skateparks in the Northern Suburbs and Wollongong City Centre.
These projects are part of a broader $850 million Infrastructure Delivery Program over the next four years, encompassing the maintenance, and renewal of essential community assets, including footpaths and shared paths, roads, stormwater systems, playgrounds, and key civic facilities such as the Corrimal Community Centre and Library, Town Hall and Art Gallery.
